Note: Last week, several anti-regulatory provisions that the Coalition for Sensible Safeguards opposed were removed from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Reauthorization Bill.

The Coalition for Sensible Safeguards applauds those who stood up for working families by rejecting provisions that would tilt our system of public protections even more toward corporate interests. The harmful anti-safeguard provisions removed from the SBA Reauthorization Bill would have increased corporate capture of our regulatory agencies under the false pretense of helping small business.

Americans know that harming our health, economy and environment does not help small businesses. To the contrary, a deregulatory agenda that prioritizes corporate interests is dangerous. Agencies with critical public health and safety missions – such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and more – are now straying from their missions, gutting and rolling back protections for children, workers, consumers and the environment to benefit corporations.

Strong safeguards backed by tough enforcement level the playing field and create the kind of stable economic conditions that small businesses need to thrive. To protect our families and children, we need a regulatory system that works.
