5 Years Later, Our Consumer Products Are Safer

5 years ago the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CSPIA) passed, sailing through the House of Representatives 407-0 .   This law gives the Consumer Product Safety Commission the resources it needs to protect the public, establishes new standards for lead content in products designed for children, requires that children’s products are tested before they are sold,  increased criminal and civil penalties for non-compliance, and authorized an online database to help consumers easily identify recalled or dangerous products.

“The CPSIA represents the most comprehensive strengthening of product safety laws in a generation. The CPSIA gave new vigor to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The agency now reflects consumer perception of what our nation’s product safety net should be. Consumers are safer as a result of the CPSIA and its effective implementation.  New rules will have an important and positive impact on consumers.”  ~Rachel Weintruab, Consumer federation of America

This week CSS is highlighting the top 5 breakthroughs in the first 5 years of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).
