Elijah Cummings was a champion for our nation’s system of public protections. He recognized the value of effective regulatory safeguards as a tool for achieving fairness and justice for all. And he courageously stood up for regulation against self-serving attacks from powerful industries and anti-government ideologues – even when few other lawmakers were willing to take the political risk of doing so. Our nation has stronger environmental, health, safety, worker and consumer safeguards because of his courage. The Coalition for Sensible Safeguards was proud to work with Congressman Cummings and joins millions of Americans in mourning his passing.
